Summary
The Iowa Electronic Markets is a futures market run for research and teaching purposes. Objective
Allow Traders to buy and sell real-money contracts based on their belief about the outcome of an election or other event.
Allow faculty and students the ability to use this “wisdom of crowds” for teaching and research purposes.
Solution
The IEM re-write began in 2015 as a complete overhaul to an antiquated system that had originally been developed by a faculty member and a university alum. We enhanced security and added robust infrastructure that allows trades to be placed in a queue, significantly improving performance. We also added an administrative interface and various other features that make the trading system seamless.
