CSI has collaborated with many of the UI's units and created a wide variety of software solutions. We currently have over 150 applications in production addressing campus needs of all sorts. We build applications that help with teaching, research, or administrative needs. We build web apps, mobile apps, desktop apps, databases, integrations that move data between apps, and more! To support this variety, CSI has three subgroups focusing in different technologies that have advantages for different types of problems. Our projects can range from those taking a few weeks to those taking several years. Excelling@Iowa is a campus-wide student success platform used by staff & faculty to help students succeed at the University of Iowa. Based on the student's survey responses and institutional information, the system identifies students who may be struggling with the transition to the University of Iowa. The purpose of Excelling@Iowa is to provide staff and faculty with an actionable platform to help students succeed at the University.

Iowa Electronic Markets Trading Screen (Desktop)

Iowa Electronic Markets

The Iowa Electronic Markets is a futures market run for research and teaching purposes. Traders can buy and sell real-money contracts based on their belief about the outcome of an election or other event. Using this "wisdom of crowds," the price of a contract at any given time is a forecast of the outcome.

Calendar Combiner Monitor Example

Calendar Combiner Settings

The Settings application manages University dates on your Office 365 and optional, external calendars. Dates can include meeting times for courses, labs, and discussion sections, Registrar dates like spring break and the last day to drop a course, as well as student or staff holidays (classes or offices closed). A settings application is provided to customize which dates you’d like to see and how and where you’d like to see them.

PowerUp Laptop Example

PowerUp

Powers up your University-provided PC, bringing it out of a low-power, energy-saving state from any other Internet-connected PC or mobile phone. Designed to facilitate remote access while furthering the University’s energy-saving goals. It provides access to a list of campus computers you’re known to be associated with for easier configuration, but it can also be configured manually. Requires VPN access and two-factor authentication.

Dance Marathon is an organization that raises funds for children with cancer. The Donations application allows the University of Iowa Dance Marathon group to easily accept electronic donations, and engage doners to help Dancers meet their fundraising goals.

Hawk Ideas is a student outreach platform for the UI Student Government. It allows students to write and vote on proposals for solving issues they face at the university. The UI Student Government formally considers proposals with enough votes.

Classics Word Power Drill

Classics Word Power Greek and Latin Drill helps students memorize the Greek and Latin sources for English words. Students identify the Greek and Latin affixes and stems for English words, their definitions, and finally the definition and part of speech of the full word. Vociferation voc [stem; voice, call] i [connecting vowel] fer [stem; bear, carry] at [special suffix; make] ion [suffix] – abstract noun meaning shout, clamor.

Sounds of Speech Mobile Example

Sounds of Speech

The Sounds of Speech application is available for iOS or Android. It helps learners around the globe with the pronunciation of English and its phonemes.

The Sounds of Speech website helps students of Spanish and German learn about pronunciation and phonemes. Visitors can watch step by step descriptions about how each phoneme is formed and listen and watch speakers use the phoneme in a word.
